Open a Mercury account for your LLC as a non-US resident: documents and application

Prepare your US LLC's Mercury application: company records, EIN evidence, legal and operating addresses, ownership and the first dollar payments.

A non-US resident can apply for Mercury with a US LLC. The useful starting point is your business: what it sells, where it operates and how it will use the account. Mercury reviews eligibility rather than treating a US formation certificate as automatic approval.

A well-prepared account gives your LLC a clear way to collect dollars, pay suppliers and organize business spending. Exentax helps you prepare the company records, addresses and ownership information, then follows the application with you through Mercury's decision.

Start with the job you need Mercury to do

For a business collecting revenue in dollars, a dedicated account in the LLC's name can separate company money from the owner's personal finances. Think about the actual transactions: customer receipts, supplier payments, operating expenses and funds retained for future commitments.

Write down who will send money, how often and for what purpose. This is more useful than choosing a provider because it is popular. A consultant with a few large invoices and an online retailer with frequent processor payouts need different payment routines even if both use US LLCs.

Mercury is a fintech company, not an FDIC-insured bank. Its legal materials identify Choice Financial Group and Column N.A. as banking providers. Check the agreement for the account you receive, and distinguish deposit accounts from investment or other financial products offered under the same brand.

Non-resident eligibility is about the company and its owners

Mercury's eligibility guidance covers US-formed businesses with international founders and current or planned US operations. Check the current country and activity criteria before preparing the application.

Explain the business in ordinary language. “Online services” leaves most questions unanswered. A better description identifies the service, the customer and how delivery works. Your website and supporting documents should make the same business understandable.

A new LLC can explain its business through the services it offers, its intended customers and upcoming contracts. Keep projected receipts separate from revenue already earned so Mercury can assess the business at its current stage and understand how it intends to use the account.

Put the right evidence behind each answer

Preparing documents is not about sending the largest possible folder. Each file should answer a specific question and match the legal name, people and addresses on the application.

EvidenceWhat it explainsWhat to check
State-filed formation documentWhich legal entity is applyingFinal filed copy and full LLC name
IRS-issued EIN evidenceThe company's tax identifierMatching entity name and EIN
Requested personal identificationWho owns or controls the businessLegibility and current validity
Address evidence when requestedWhere the stated work or residence is locatedName, complete address and date
Genuine business recordsHow the business earns or expects to earn revenueRelevance to the activity described

Mercury's document checklist distinguishes IRS-issued EIN evidence from an unprocessed application. A filled-in SS-4 is not the same as a version returned by the IRS. Our guide to CP 575 and letter 147C explains how to identify the evidence you hold.

Keep your Operating Agreement available as part of the company's records. That does not mean every corporate document is automatically required in every application. Follow the request applicable to your ownership structure and explain the relevant point directly.

An overseas founder may legitimately have a US company address and work from a different country. The task is to put each address in the right field, with evidence that describes reality.

Mercury connects this to the US address in the formation records. Review it against the company's documents and the provider's legal-address criteria. Your day-to-day place of work is recorded separately as the operating address.

The place where the business operates

The published policy allows a verifiable international working address, including a home. A registered agent's address is not a substitute for that operating location. The address requirements explain the distinction and supporting evidence.

If you work from home, begin with the genuine address and the appropriate proof. Our separate Proof of Address guide goes deeper into residential, company and operating evidence; this application should use the combination relevant to you.

Delivery details

Check where a physical card can be delivered for your account. A delivery arrangement should not overwrite the place where the business actually operates. Keeping those purposes separate also makes later updates easier.

Ownership and account permissions answer different questions

Mercury asks about beneficial owners and a person with operating control. When another company owns part of the LLC, prepare an ownership chart that traces the relationship to the relevant individuals.

Consider an illustrative two-member consultancy. Both members have ownership interests, but only one handles supplier payments. The ownership information should reflect both people where required; account permissions should reflect their actual responsibilities. Sharing one login does not create a sound division of duties.

Exentax coordinates the application with your authorization. Identity checks and account-holder decisions stay within the provider's approved channels. Professional support does not require you to hand over authentication codes or surrender control of the company's account.

Submission, review and activation

Keep these stages distinct. A saved draft has not necessarily been submitted. An application being reviewed is not yet an account you should announce to customers.

Follow Mercury's application status and the messages sent to your registered contact details. If additional information is requested, answer that question with the relevant document and explanation. Keep it consistent with the original submission instead of opening duplicate applications.

Once approved, review authentication, permissions and payment instructions before using the account. Start with a transaction proportionate to the business, verify the result and keep its supporting record. That gives you practical confirmation before moving a larger flow of customer receipts.

Keep business and contact information current after opening. Our guide to banking reviews and information requests explains how to prepare a response when a provider needs to understand changes in your activity.

USD collections and international payments

Give the payer the instructions for the actual payment route. ACH details and wire instructions serve different purposes; use the account's current instructions rather than copying a routing number from an old example. The ACH versus wire guide explains when each route is useful.

Before an international payment, review the recipient, currency, intermediary route and total cost. Mercury's pricing page separates included banking services from chargeable features. The cost of holding an account does not describe every transaction made through it.

If European customers need to pay in euros, assess a suitable EUR collection route for the LLC alongside Mercury. Decide where funds arrive and when conversion makes sense. A good banking structure lets each account perform a useful role.

Questions founders ask about opening Mercury

Can I apply while working from home outside the US?

Mercury's policy allows a verifiable overseas operating address, including a residential address. Keep it separate from the LLC's legal address and check the remaining eligibility conditions.

Can a newly formed LLC apply before it has revenue?

The eligibility review considers current or planned US operations. Describe the actual stage of the business and the records available. Forecast revenue should remain a forecast, not be presented as completed sales.

Does approval determine the LLC's tax treatment?

No. Banking approval and tax classification are separate matters. The account supports company operations; tax obligations depend on the entity, owner and activity rather than the provider's name.

Open with a clear plan and personal support

Exentax reviews the information already available for your LLC, identifies what is missing and helps prepare a coherent Mercury application. We coordinate authorized submission and follow-up, keeping you informed through the provider's decision.

Where another provider would serve a particular need better, we consider it as part of the LLC's wider banking structure. The outcome you need is straightforward: an organized company that can receive money, make payments and keep working with a team available to help.
