Payment gateways for an LLC: choosing Stripe, PayPal, Dodo or Hotmart
Choose how your LLC gets paid: compare Stripe, PayPal, Dodo and Hotmart by customers, costs, currencies and sales model.
Your customer wants an easy way to pay. You want to know what reaches the bank, when it becomes available and which business stands behind the sale. A US LLC gives that relationship a company of its own, with room for several accounts and payment channels. Choosing Stripe, PayPal, Dodo Payments or Hotmart starts with the business you run.
This is a guide to choosing a payment model, rather than another account-opening checklist. Project-based consulting, a software subscription and an affiliate-led course launch call for different decisions. Exentax works from your customers, markets and margins to prepare the combination and support you after setup.
Payment processor, Merchant of Record and bank are different roles
With conventional payment processing, the LLC sells to the customer and a provider handles the payment. A Merchant of Record (MoR) arrangement introduces a seller of record with responsibilities defined by its contract for the transactions it handles. The bank receives and holds funds; opening an account does not make it a substitute for either role.
That distinction changes the comparison. A fee covering seller-of-record services is not directly comparable with a fee for card processing alone. Equally, a balance shown by a processor is not necessarily money already available in the company bank account.
| Model | Main role | Question before choosing |
|---|---|---|
| Conventional Stripe Payments | Process payments for the selling business | What purchase experience and recurring billing do we need? |
| PayPal Business | Offer a payment channel buyers recognise | Do our customers prefer it when completing a purchase? |
| Dodo Payments as MoR | Act as seller of record for eligible digital products | Do the product, markets and reseller agreement fit? |
| Hotmart | Sell digital products through its ecosystem | Do we need distribution, affiliates and content delivery? |
| Bank transfer | Receive funds directly in a compatible LLC account | Which currency and payment instructions does the buyer need? |
You can combine these functions. Each channel should have a purpose, and buyers should understand who receives their payment, what it covers and where to get help.
Stripe: shape the purchase experience
Consider Stripe when you sell through your own website and want control over how customers pay, renew a subscription or choose between payment methods. A complex integration is not always the starting point: a payment link can serve a one-off sale.
Walk through the purchase as a customer. Check whether the price, billing interval, cancellation and trading name are clear before payment. Then review what the buyer receives and how delivery is recorded. The aim is not to add more buttons; it is to make the purchase easy to complete and recognise later.
This comparison refers to conventional Stripe Payments. Other Stripe products and agreements can have a different scope, so the brand alone does not determine who performs every role. Our dedicated Stripe guide covers setup and verification. Here, the decision is whether the payment channel suits the business in the first place.
PayPal: meet an existing buyer preference
PayPal can earn its place when part of your audience already uses it and prefers that route. Measure its contribution through completed purchases, not merely clicks on the button.
Company identity, tax certification and the owner's documents are separate questions. An ITIN is not a universal requirement to add to every LLC using PayPal: the information needed depends on the account holder and tax classification. Exentax reviews the circumstances before preparing a submission.
Think beyond the initial payment. Buyers should recognise the charge, find the appropriate invoice or receipt and know how to request a refund. A well-prepared setup connects those moments without expecting PayPal to become the business's entire financial structure.
Dodo Payments: assess the seller-of-record model
Dodo describes its MoR service as selling eligible digital products to the buyer and handling the indirect taxes associated with those transactions. That can simplify commercial expansion into supported markets.
The scope matters. Handling those sales does not replace the LLC's accounting, annual obligations or the tax position of the company and its members. Our team coordinates the LLC's ongoing needs with the chosen sales arrangement, including banking, records and responsibilities.
Before committing, establish which products are accepted, whose name the buyer sees, who issues the sales invoice, how refunds work and what information comes with a payout. You need not become a specialist in every platform. You do need to understand the terms affecting your margin and customer relationship.
Hotmart: when distribution and delivery matter too
A course or membership may need more than a payment form. If affiliates, content access and a digital-product buying experience form part of your strategy, assess Hotmart as an ecosystem.
A useful comparison includes the work involved in delivering the product, supporting buyers, managing collaborators and understanding the proceeds of each sale. A platform can justify its cost by solving tasks you actually need. Paying for features you will never use is a different proposition.
Our Hotmart guide goes deeper into balances, affiliate shares and withdrawals. The question here comes earlier: does that ecosystem help sell your product, or would a more direct relationship with the buyer work better?
Compare the cost of a sale, not isolated percentages
Charges depend on account country, payment method, card, currency and contracted services. Check the official pricing for the exact product you intend to use. A headline percentage does not necessarily include cross-border payments, subscriptions, conversion or additional services.
Take a representative sale and write down:
- The buyer's payment and any tax included.
- The percentage and fixed processing charge.
- Conversion, withdrawal and contracted service costs.
- Refunds and amounts not yet available.
- The net bank receipt and expected availability.
The following is an illustrative example, not a provider quote or published fee:
| Item | Amount |
|---|---|
| Customer payment, excluding taxes in this example | 1,000 USD |
| Assumed total processing and conversion costs | −40 USD |
| Assumed net before other business expenses | 960 USD |
The 960 USD is not automatically profit. It helps compare collection costs; product costs, suppliers and other business expenses come afterwards. Repeat the exercise for small and large purchases. A fixed charge has much more influence on a low-value sale.
Also compare like with like. A monthly subscription service should be assessed over renewals, not just its first payment. For project work, consider whether a client will use its existing bank approval process. The option with the lowest displayed fee may not be the easiest way to get that invoice paid.
EUR, USD and the receiving account
The currency shown to the buyer, the processor balance and the bank receipt may differ. Choose where conversion should happen and which expenses you will pay next. There is little value in converting to USD only to buy EUR again for a European supplier.
An LLC can use several accounts for different purposes. Exentax assesses Relay, Slash, Wise Business and other providers against eligibility, currencies and the intended operation. Before connecting an account, we review receiving instructions, ownership, processor compatibility and applicable charges.
When choosing an account, distinguish the brand from the entity providing the service. If it asks you to explain incoming funds, our guide to source of funds and source of wealth sets out what each type of evidence establishes.
Three possible combinations
Physical goods sourced from Asia add purchasing, inventory and supplier currency to the decision. Our comparison of an LLC and a Hong Kong company for ecommerce explores that business model. For activities requiring a specialist assessment, see how to prepare a payment-provider application.
Project-based services. An invoice paid by transfer can suit business clients. A card link or PayPal adds convenience where the buyer needs it. The amount and the client's approval process guide the choice.
Digital subscriptions. Compare direct sales with a MoR arrangement, including renewals, plan changes, buyer support and international sales. This changes the commercial relationship, not just the payment button.
Courses with affiliates. Assess distribution and delivery alongside collection. Keep the creator's and collaborators' shares clear so you can understand the result of a launch.
These are design scenarios, not automatic recommendations. Four payment accounts do not improve a business that would be better served by two well-maintained channels.
Questions about payment gateways for an LLC
Can one LLC use several payment providers?
Yes, where each provider accepts the company and its activity. Give every channel a purpose rather than creating alternatives nobody maintains. This is particularly useful when customers have different payment preferences.
Does every provider require an Operating Agreement and ITIN?
There is no identical document pack for every platform. We prepare the company records and address the actual request. Company information and the details of verified individuals perform different functions.
Does a Merchant of Record handle all my taxes?
Its contractual role concerns the transactions it handles. The LLC retains its own business and tax obligations. The advantage is delegating a defined part of the sales process, not treating it as complete company management.
What if the accounts are already open?
We start with what works: products, buyers, currencies, records and the receiving bank. Then we identify specific improvements. Organising payments does not require rebuilding the company or replacing useful providers.
How Exentax prepares the payment structure
Tell us what you sell, who buys and where you intend to use the funds. Our team reviews the LLC, recommends suitable channels and coordinates banking, documentation and setup within the agreed scope. Each provider makes its admission decision; we prepare the application and follow it through with you.
The intended result is practical: payments you understand, customers you can support and a structure that can grow with the business. The LLC is the company supporting that operation, not merely a document used to open a payment account.
